During the World Wars, the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and later the Royal Canadian Air Force appointed historical officers to produce historical reports (often while the wars were still raging) to be used for future records. The subsequent Canadian Military Headquarters (CMHQ) and Army Headquarters (AHQ) reports authored by historical officers supervised by Col. C. P. Stacey came to form the basis of the Official History of the Canadian Army in the Second World War.
